VOLUNTEER WITH US

Be a Literacy Tutor

We need passionate and committed individuals who would like to champion literacy with us. Volunteers who we call our Literacy Tutors, are the lifeblood of MYReaders’ efforts. They are at the forefront of championing literacy in society. Together, let us make a difference by reading with a child through our programmes.

What being a Literacy Tutor means to us

  • Volunteering is an enduring journey

Consistency is key in building that bridge of trust and rapport between a volunteer and his/her students. We require our Literacy Tutors to commit to at least 14 weeks (half a reading cycle) so that each child reads with the same individual.

  • Structure and context is half the battle won

Our materials are structured based on the literacy development process and written in the Malaysian context so that students can relate to what they read. The structure of the programme helps the children know what to expect in each class, but still allows ample space for our Literacy Tutors to be creative in their lessons with the students.

  • Today a Literacy Tutor, tomorrow a trainer.

We believe in the power of having a community of your own, even for our Literacy Tutors. Besides the first onboarding training, we also run upskilling training workshops for them as part of a professional learning community.

Stories from our Literacy Tutors

Many of our previous Literacy Tutors have joined us as interns and staff, gone on to teach, or start their own literacy programmes.

“In my journey, I have found my passion. MYReaders has helped me realise that in the future I want to be helping children who are at a disadvantage.”

— Aysha

  • “I think it's very systematic, easy to follow and engaging. I also love the strategy used to gauge the kids' progress & learning performance as this is something that I struggled to measure in my class before and it is extremely important to understand if your learning methods has positively impacted the kids.” - Nadira, Volunteer

  • “It was during the MCO, and I thought it'd be fun to spend time doing something for the community even as I'm stuck at home. I believe in what MYReaders stands for, and I'm glad to be a small part of their bigger picture. Prior to this, I was unaware of the severity of illiteracy in Malaysia. I thought they would be more towards areas where there's less economic growth.” - Volunteer

  • “The experience has been absolutely wonderful! I’ve made good friends with other volunteers and the students while learning myself. It's a win-win situation. I’d encourage others to get involved with similar initiatives by just jumping in! The best experiences come from taking action first and asking questions later - just as how my experience in MYReaders has been". - Sanjay, Volunteer
